"Derailed" reviewed, movie shoot

Interesting weekend…

I’ve already blogged below about Friday — went to see “Capote” and really liked the performance of Phillip Seymore Hoffman, although I found the film itself to be a little slow.

Saturday, went with Oz and John X to shoot film for their movie. Always a fun time. We went to Untitled and filmed some shots of me and a former student of Oz, Sydney, at the Ken Little exhibition. I wrote some dialogue and Sydney “nailed” her line. It’ll be a fun part of the movie. Then, the four of us went to the huge ass cross at Lifechurch in Edmond to film a dream sequence wherein Sydney runs around in a diaphonous gown and I chase her, but can not catch up to her. The church folks busted us and quizzed us about what we were doing, but Oz told them some crap and they left us alone.

That night was OuiMarcy’s birthday party for the Scorpios, especially including Tammy the ultimate artist’s model for many years around this town. It was nice sitting with a large group of friends around the outside firepit and roasting hot dogs and making s’mores. The Frito chili pie was very very good, especially if one tried some of Deb’s white chili. Somehow, I felt a little agoraphobic and alienated after about 2 hours and sneaked out and went home. I’m sorry about not speaking to anyone before leaving, but it was just one of those things where I was siezed by the impulse to isolate and couldn’t resist it.

Sunday, met the lovely Juliet at Red Cup along with her neighbors Greg and Mindy. A large group of Red Cup regulars were there and they jumped online to see my modeling pictures, or so I’m told. Later, the four of us went to see “Derailed”, starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Anniston. Unfortunately, I guessed the “mystery” within the first 10-15 minutes. It was an OK movie, but when it’s telegraphed like that, it takes away from the enjoyment. No need to tell you how it ends, blahblahblogblah, if you can’t figure it out for yourself maybe you’ll actually like the movie more than I did. Clive Owen acted Jennifer Anniston off the screen.

WaPo Editorial that struck my fancy

LOOK OUT, JAY Leno and David Letterman: Pat Robertson is at it again. The television evangelist and former Republican presidential candidate has a way of coming up with some real thigh-slappers. This one must have the people of Dover, Pa., rolling in the aisles. On Thursday Mr. Robertson said on his daily television show, “The 700 Club,” that because all eight Dover school board members up for reelection on Tuesday were voted out of office after trying to impose “intelligent design” on high school students as an alternative to the theory of evolution, God is not going to show up if there’s a disaster in Dover. They’d voted God out of the city, Mr. Robertson said. How Mr. Robertson managed to deliver that line with a straight face is beyond us. But we suppose that when you have his comedic touch, anything’s possible.

Quick Movie Review and other matters

Just went to see “Capote” and really thought very highly of Phillip Seymore Hoffman’s portrayal of Truman Capote during the time he was writing “In Cold Blood”. The Gary noted that a lot of Capote’s humor from the biography upon which the film is based is left out of the movie. Pretty bleak going through the details of the Clutter killings and the subsequent death by hangings of Dick and Perry. Reminded me of Robert Blake in the movie based on Capote’s book. Riviting performance by Hoffman. Really Oscar material. The movie was less impressive than some of the portrayals within the movie, Mr. and Mrs. Oz opined, and I agree. The four of us missed a performance by Roger Lienke at The Red Cup, arriving too late after dinner at Lido, attended as well by SuzArt, Ralph’s Sharon and BKMDANO. BobO hurt himself getting off his scooter. KW attended Paseo Friday drinks on her way to IAO’s opening of UCO grad student art. I had a pretty good day except I got dumped — AGAIN! This morning, folks at the Red Cup were still talking about me reading my short story Thursday night (OK, I prompted them to talk about it because I’m so fucking self centered. Get over it.). The cool part about that is that I went from the Cup to bin 73, ran into some OK film makers of short films and they were interested in the story and the other short stories I’ve posted on the blog. Cool, huh? Got some photos back from the weekend photo shoot and Juliet at Elastic Cafe says one of them is a sure “money shot.” I think they’re just joshing me, but what do I know? I may run up to Stillwater and see if I can get the webmaster to help me to learn how to post images on this blog. Someday, there might even be video if JohnX helps. Hey, it COULD happen!

"intelligent design" update

There won’t be a federal court ruling until January, but the voters know Jesus and they know science and they don’t want God in biology class in Dover, PA., despite the radical, evangelical, fundamentalist right wing protests to the contrary. God Save the Republic!

By Jill Lawrence, USA TODAY
The court verdict in a landmark lawsuit on “intelligent design” is weeks away, but voters in Dover, Pa., delivered their judgment this week by sweeping out eight of nine school board members who decided that ninth-grade science students must be told the concept is an alternative to evolution.

The board stirred controversy by requiring a one-minute classroom statement about the idea that parts of life and the universe are so complex that an intelligent designer best explains them. That put Dover at the center of a national argument over whether intelligent design is science or religion. (Related item: Kansas schools can teach ‘intelligent design’)

All nine board members backed the classroom statement, but only eight were up for re-election. They all lost to challengers who argued that the discussion doesn’t belong in science class.

I'm stunned

Court clerk switches party

By John Sutter
The Oklahoman

Oklahoma County Court Clerk Patricia Presley switched her political affiliation from Republican to Democrat on Wednesday.
“I just personally believe that the Democratic Party is more of an inclusive party than the Republican Party,” Presley said.

“I am inclusive of all people — and I do mean all people — no matter what their race is, no matter what their religion is, no matter what their political affiliation is,” said Presley, who cited her work in women’s groups.

Presley, who was elected on a Republican ticket, said her decision does not affect her job. She said she has not received a donation from the Republican Party in many years.

Her decision has nothing to do with President Bush’s politics or current White House scandals, she said.

Presley said the county should consider electing its officials on nonpartisan tickets in the future.

Political registration “doesn’t affect my job in the least,” she said. “We don’t make policy for the county. It has no political implication on my office at all.”

Oklahoma City officials are elected without political affiliation, although during the recent mayor’s race, the Oklahoma Republican Party campaigned on behalf of the election winner, Mayor Mick Cornett

This absolutely stuns me. Considering the dominance of the GOP in Oklahoma County, why would an elected –ELECTED! — official switch parties? She must have been powerfully motivated by SOMETHING. I don’t have a clue, personally, but you can bet there’s a much bigger story behind this.

French Rioting

Villepin and Chirac have a governmental crisis on their hands with the rioting by 2d generation African immigrants in some 300 French towns. No leader of the uprisings has emerged, so they’re confused about who gets France when they surrender.

Outraged Again

“Black” Spending on Pork

Turns out we’re spending $44 Billion a year on “intelligence” except that lots of that money isn’t spent in a very smart way and more of it goes down ratholes to enrich the contributors to certain Congressmen. It’s an outrage. Company gets contract, Congressman gets contribution; Congressman gets contribution and company gets contract. You wash my hands. Now, I’ll wash yours. Fuckers

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY SIS!!

Today, November 9, is my baby sister’s birthday. Mary E. Marshall is, oh, at least 29 today. All grown up and beautiful. Mary E. is sweet, very beautiful and the source of much wisdom in my family. I rely on her to tell me the truth about my lovelife and give me good advice. I don’t listen, of course, but she does tell me the truth and give me good advice. Happy Birthday, baby sis. I love you.
