Monday came on down

So, here I am waiting for frozen beef to thaw and jeans to dry and, lacking any better sense, I thought I’d say a word or two about my weekend… .

Went to the Girlie Show last weekend and I don’t know if I’ll go back next year. I had a very good time, I liked who I was with and it’s always nice to go to one of those crowd scenes and see people you know but don’t see often. But, it’s not an art show. It may be a girlie show and maybe all the booth takers are girls/women, but it was “crafty”. Just a bunch of knickknacks with the odd purse or something else thrown in. Saw only one painter whose work I was willing to take seriously and she didn’t just knock off my socks, especially in comparison to the week before at JRB’s Michi Susan show. I can’t remember the ticket price, but it was like $15 bucks and for that money, it wasn’t worth the effort to go get pizza from Sauced! and a coke and walk around looking at embroidered pillows that say things about cats/dogs/kids/husbands and/or cooking. Think next year, I’ll save my money for the Red Tie or or Omlette or something else later in the season.

Saturday there were football games and OSU won in Nebraska for the first time since before I was born and I’m an old guy. That actually was a bigger deal for me than OU beating Mizzou at home, although it’s nice to see OU in the top 6 of the BCS poll with pretty good chance of hanging in, barring another upset like Colo. Already I’ve seen a national columnist for Yahoo Sports predict a national championship for OU and local guys talking about a rematch of the Missouri game in the Big 12 championship. I predict that there will be upsets and surprises in the last half of the season. Any bets?

Got a call from an old friend over the weekend and he’s not been doing so well. He thinks he’s going to have to go on Social Security disability and live with his sister in another state. This is a guy I went to junior high and high school with and we graduated the same year, so he’s my age and he’s going on disability? There was a third guy I hung out with in high school and he’s living in Calif. and he’s also had a whole wide range of physical problems in the past year or two; gallbladder operations and Lord only knows whatall have kept him from work for 15 out of the past 24 months. when did these guys get old? what have they been doing while I wasn’t looking? all at once, I feel very lucky.

Sunday was just household chores for most of the day, but Sunday night made the whole weekend magic. I love love love thunderstorms. I settled in with a movie after dinner and it was one I’d been looking forward to seeing alone so I could stop it and think about it and work through it. Pan’s Labyrinth was the movie, a Spanish film about Franco’s Spain in 1944 and also about a young girl’s fantasy life with fairies and a faun and magic and just all kindsa stuff. It set a good context for the storm that came in shortly after 9 p.m. Wow, what a storm! Lightning hit twice so close that all the lights in the neighborhood flickered out and the thunder that followed almost knocked me off my feet as I stood under the eaves watching. Then, the rain came pouring harder than ever. Winds that pushed my oak tree over at the waist and mussed the needled pine in my back yard. I love being outside but protected in a good rainstorm like that. Only trouble was that I was so excited by the storm that only one movie wasn’t enough and I was up very late watching some bad movies — Mila Jojovitch’s efforts in Resident Evil blowing up zombies wasn’t really enough to save the movie, even though things blowed up real good and there was some gratuitous nudity, something I always like.

Seems that I can smell the steak, so it must be time to stop for dinner.

P.S. this isn’t an earworm. this is the sexiest video and song I’ve seen in a long time, though.

3:40 a.m.

I read <a href="http://MCARP’s post today with understanding and sympathy and a little sadness. So, I rushed off into the internets to try and find something that would be helpful.

(Anne Meara (Ben Stiller’s Mom) narrates with just the right touch of humor and helpfulness, I think.)

Then, it occurred to me that maybe I’d misunderstood the problem and that maybe this one would be more helpful.

Then, I thought: what if my little suggestions work? What if MCARP gets over his heebeegeebees? Ah! THIS will help!

Sadly, even if MCARP makes progress towards love, there’s always the thorn in roses.

sports update

For those of you keeping score, I won $3.35 playing poker last night with my buds.

Were any other sports or games played yesterday?

Oh. Yes, of course.

Mrs. Snarky Snarkerson wants everyone to know that football was played yesterday and I looked it up and I’ll be darned if she isn’t correct.

Highly touted USC lost to lowly regarded Standford.

Shows what experts know.

Does that about round it up?

Oh.

OSU lost a sqeaker to Texas A&M. Poor ‘pokes.

So, that should just about …

Yeah. No one would have hardly noticed in this town, but it seem that the University of Oklahoma beat some big loser named Mac Brown yesterday. I didn’t know there was a school named Mack Brown. OH. He’s just the coach? Oh, well. The school is Texas? I thought OSU played Texas yesterday. Oh. Different Texas.

Here it is! OU 28, Texas 21.

That’s supposed to be significant, so there it is. FARK!
