Just went to see “Capote” and really thought very highly of Phillip Seymore Hoffman’s portrayal of Truman Capote during the time he was writing “In Cold Blood”. The Gary noted that a lot of Capote’s humor from the biography upon which the film is based is left out of the movie. Pretty bleak going through the details of the Clutter killings and the subsequent death by hangings of Dick and Perry. Reminded me of Robert Blake in the movie based on Capote’s book. Riviting performance by Hoffman. Really Oscar material. The movie was less impressive than some of the portrayals within the movie, Mr. and Mrs. Oz opined, and I agree. The four of us missed a performance by Roger Lienke at The Red Cup, arriving too late after dinner at Lido, attended as well by SuzArt, Ralph’s Sharon and BKMDANO. BobO hurt himself getting off his scooter. KW attended Paseo Friday drinks on her way to IAO’s opening of UCO grad student art. I had a pretty good day except I got dumped — AGAIN! This morning, folks at the Red Cup were still talking about me reading my short story Thursday night (OK, I prompted them to talk about it because I’m so fucking self centered. Get over it.). The cool part about that is that I went from the Cup to bin 73, ran into some OK film makers of short films and they were interested in the story and the other short stories I’ve posted on the blog. Cool, huh? Got some photos back from the weekend photo shoot and Juliet at Elastic Cafe says one of them is a sure “money shot.” I think they’re just joshing me, but what do I know? I may run up to Stillwater and see if I can get the webmaster to help me to learn how to post images on this blog. Someday, there might even be video if JohnX helps. Hey, it COULD happen!

Court clerk switches party

Oklahoma County Court Clerk Patricia Presley switched her political affiliation from Republican to Democrat on Wednesday.
“I just personally believe that the Democratic Party is more of an inclusive party than the Republican Party,” Presley said.

“I am inclusive of all people — and I do mean all people — no matter what their race is, no matter what their religion is, no matter what their political affiliation is,” said Presley, who cited her work in women’s groups.

Presley, who was elected on a Republican ticket, said her decision does not affect her job. She said she has not received a donation from the Republican Party in many years.

Her decision has nothing to do with President Bush’s politics or current White House scandals, she said.

Presley said the county should consider electing its officials on nonpartisan tickets in the future.

Political registration “doesn’t affect my job in the least,” she said. “We don’t make policy for the county. It has no political implication on my office at all.”

Oklahoma City officials are elected without political affiliation, although during the recent mayor’s race, the Oklahoma Republican Party campaigned on behalf of the election winner, Mayor Mick Cornett

This absolutely stuns me. Considering the dominance of the GOP in Oklahoma County, why would an elected –ELECTED! — official switch parties? She must have been powerfully motivated by SOMETHING. I don’t have a clue, personally, but you can bet there’s a much bigger story behind this.

• Archaeologists unveil ancient church in Israel

MEGIDDO PRISON, Israel – Israeli prisoner Ramil Razilo was removing rubble from the planned site of a new prison ward when his shovel uncovered the edge of an elaborate mosaic, unveiling what Israeli archaeologists said Sunday may be the Holy Land’s oldest church.

The discovery of the church in the northern Israeli town of Megiddo, near the biblical Armageddon, was hailed by experts as an important discovery that could reveal details about the development of the early church in the region. Archaeologists said the church dated from the third century, decades before Constantine legalized Christianity across the Byzantine Empire.

“What’s clear today is that it’s the oldest archaeological remains of a church in Israel, maybe even in the entire region. Whether in the entire world, it’s still too early to say,” said Yotam Tepper, the excavation’s head archaeologist.

I’ve gone from “full flavor” to “lights” and today I started on “ultra lights”, stepping down my nicotine intake. Next stop is to some horrible brand that is more like running into the wind with a funnel in your mouth than really smoking a cigaret. After that, I’ll be on top of the patches, gum, lozenges, ear cuffs, acupuncture, hypnotism, prayer and unbridled aggression. If you see me with a flame thrower in my hands, just step away from the car. Nobody moves and nobody gets hurt.

It seems clear that I’m take-no-prisoners against this administration and it’s war in Iraq. I readily confess to being a yellow dog Democrat liberal/progressive. I also hope it’s clear I love my son-in-law who’s in the military and I’m proud that he’s doing his duty and upholding his honor. I may have overstepped my bounds tonight, but, then, I’m sort of in the business of breaking rules nowadays. It’s part of my devil-may-care attitude this calendar year. I just don’t give much of a fuck. Anyway, maybe I overstepped my boundaries tonight when I not only attended tonight’s Moveon.org peace rally (followed by a candlelight vigil I sidestepped) at Memorial Park and held the “Honk for Peace” sign, but also allowed myself to be interviewed by someone who claimed to be from a radio network –1520 in OKC. Supposedly will be broadcast, if at all, tomorrow morning (Thursday). I think my son in law is an honorable man doing his duty without complaint as best he can and I’m very proud of him. I wish he were home with my grandchildren. I haven’t asked anyone’s permission to oppose this war. I opposed it before my son in law looked like he would have to go and I still do. This war is wrong and we should expose the leaders who took us into the war as the war profiteers and liars they have proved to be. We went in for the wrong reasons and did so at the wrong time. I believe Karl Rove’s need for election fodder has as much to do with why we are in Iraq as does the Cheney-Rumsfeld-Wolfowitz-Feith cabal that has plotted this use of American power since they were in the first Bush’s administration. I believe one of the principal reasons we don’t just leave is because we don’t know how. I don’t think adequate attention was paid to an exit strategy because their utopian ideas that didn’t pan out never took into account the reality on the ground. I think they knew the WMD intelligence was weak and I think they didn’t care. I think they knew there was no link between Saddam and al-Qaida and I think they didn’t care. I think we have increased and not reduced the liklihood of another terrorist attack on America. I think we have alienated the bulk of the Muslim world. I believe the still-at-large Osama bin Lauden thinks he could not have dreamed that America would be so stupid and that we’ve played right into his hands. I think we could have spent $200 billion in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank raising the standard of living for Palestinians and have destroyed worldwide terrorism as a threat to civilization.

Enough serious shit!

Missed the usual gathering on the Paseo on Wednesday to do the anti-war thing, but I caught up with them at the Lido and latecomers made it an even 13. They put us in “time out”, we were so rowdy. There’s only one thing I don’t like about so many at dinner and that is that I can’t listen to and participate in all the conversations that go on at once. Some conversations are like soap operas and you can just pick up a word here and there and now and again and still be able to follow the story line. Others are dense and/or require special attention due to the sotto voce of one of the participants. Of course, the whispered ones are the ones you most want to hear.

Movie night was well attended, although it ended flat for the Oz and his bride. Babs rented a movie none of us knew anything about: “11:14″ with Barbara Hershey and Patrick Swayze. It turned out to be pretty good, judging by the guffaws coming from The Gary. Even nervous SuzArt managed a belly laugh or two.

Saw Larry P at the Cup this a.m. and he stays with his no comment stance, but amplifies it to include something or another about silence.
